Livia is Roman, has a strong accent and a sweet face, tattooed arms and loves art cinema, flowers, and the stones. Livia spends her days in her jewelry workshop in Rome where she creates, melts materials, embeds stones, where hands get dirty and fingers become black. Her manual process is very fascinating for me and every time I try to convince her to disclose this secret aspect of her work through video.

What comes to your mind if you think about the word risk?
My relationship with the term risk is definitely conflicting.
On one hand, I think I'm a person who has risked in life. I created Voodoo Jewels from nothing, without having any economic security and no initial investment, I believed only in myself, in my willpower and in the need to create.
On the other hand, the very fact that I had created my business, with courage, made me an extremely rigid person in my life, a person who never risks losing control, who never does anything without thinking twice. It is as if having risked a lot in the work I did make me want not to risk on other fronts.
You are passionate about arthouse cinema, being seated in an armchair, feeling the bass that makes you butterflies in your stomach helps you to project yourself into situations that do not exist, it helps you to escape from your daily life. Tell me what are the five films that I should definitely see in life.
I am passionate about cinema in general, I want to see a film in the best possible condition to immerse myself fully in the story. I love arthouse cinemas but I also love 3D and dolby if the film requires it. Five films are too little because I have millions of movies I love and I can even review the same film over and over again and again.
My top five in scattered order is:
- Romeo + Juliet by Baz Luhrmann
- Inception by Christopher Nolan
- My Sydney Pollack Africa
- Star Wars by George Lucas
- New World of Terrence Malick
- I would also like to add all the Batman shot by Nolan and all the 007 with Daniel Craig
In recent years you have focused on the development and growth of Voodoo Jewels but imagine, from tomorrow, you have the opportunity to work only two hours a day. How would you spend the rest of the day?
I would play a lot with my two little dachshunds of the heart, which at the moment I still do not have, but these are just details.
We would spend most of the afternoon at Villa Pamphili playing with the ball, I would do many rides on horseback, I would try to stay as close to nature as possible because it is the only thing that makes me feel good.
If I'm home and I'm not working I feel the need to go out, being in a closed environment makes me nervous.
I need the sun, the filtered light of the trees, the silence full of the sounds of nature.
I would read more books, I would talk more with people and especially travel more, always with my dachshunds, I would also like to start doing the pottery course and learn how to knit.
Is there anything you think others think of as insane?
In recent years I have believed that work was a kind of cathartic process for me. In this, rightly, others have always considered me mad.
What do you find useful when you're feeling stagnant?
I am a dynamic person, I have not yet found myself in a stagnant situation in which I felt helpless so maybe I act in some way without realizing it. Clearly, I think it is important to try to get out of your comfort zone, whatever it is, and identify your fears trying to go further.
Alternatively, going to get ice cream can help.
If you were invited as a speaker for a conference and you did not have to talk about your work, what would you talk about?
I would tell you about the 101 best places to eat in Rome.
What would you write on a billboard in the center of Rome?
I would not write anything. I would project one of the latest works by David Hockney, who placed numerous digital cameras on his car and took a tree-lined avenue through the woods during the four seasons. They are images full of beauty, purity, and silence that transmit great peace. Rome is a difficult city to live, today more than ever, people are tired and stressed.
An image of this type would give a moment of great serenity.

Cosa ti viene in mente se pensi alla parola rischiare?
Il mio rapporto con il termine rischiare è decisamente conflittuale.
Da una parte penso di essere una persona che nella vita ha saputo rischiare. Ho creato Voodoo Jewels dal nulla, senza avere nessuna sicurezza economica e senza
nessun investimento iniziale, ho creduto solo in me stessa, nella mia forza di volontà e nel bisogno di creare.
Dall’altra parte il fatto stesso che avessi creato una mia impresa, con coraggio, mi ha reso una persona estremamente rigida nella vita, una persona che non rischia mai di perdere il controllo, che non fa mai nulla senza pensarci due volte. È come se avendo rischiato molto nel lavoro non volessi rischiare su altri fronti.
Sei appassionata di cinema d'essai, essere seduta su una poltrona, sentire i bassi che ti creano farfalle nello stomaco ti aiuta a proiettarti in situazioni che non esistono, ti aiuta ad evadere dal tuo quotidiano. Dimmi quali sono i cinque film che dovrei assolutamente vedere nella vita.
Sono appassionata di cinema in generale, voglio vedere un film nella migliore condizione possibile per immergermi a pieno nella storia. Amo i cinema d’essai ma amo anche il 3d e il dolby se il film lo richiede. Cinque film è troppo poco perché ho milioni di film che amo e posso anche rivedere lo stesso film ripetutamente tantissime volte.

In questi ultimi anni ti sei concentrata sullo sviluppo e sulla crescita di Voodoo Jewels ma immagina, da domani, di avere la possibilità di lavorare solo due ore al giorno, come passeresti il resto della giornata?
Giocherei tantissimo con i miei due bassottini del cuore, che al momento ancora non ho, ma questi sono solo dettagli.
Passeremmo gran parte del pomeriggio a Villa Pamphili a giocare con la pallina, farei tante passeggiate a cavallo, cercherei di stare il più possibile a contatto con la natura perché è l’unica cosa che mi fa star bene.
Se sono a casa e non sto lavorando sento il bisogno di uscire, stare in un ambiente chiuso mi rende nervosa.
Ho bisogno del sole, della luce filtrata degli alberi, del silenzio pieno di rumori della natura.
Leggerei più libri, parlerei di più con le persone e soprattutto viaggerei di più, sempre con i miei bassotti, mi piacerebbe anche ricominciare a fare il corso di ceramica e imparare a fare la maglia.
C'è qualcosa in cui credi che gli altri reputano folle?
Negli ultimi anni ho creduto che il lavoro fosse una sorta di processo catartico per me. In questo, giustamente, gli altri mi hanno sempre reputato folle.
Cosa trovi utile fare quando ti senti in una situazione stagnante?
Sono una persona dinamica, non mi è ancora capitato di trovarmi in una situazione stagnante nella quale mi sentissi inerme quindi forse agisco in qualche modo senza rendermene conto. Chiaramente credo sia importante cercare di uscire dalla propria comfort zone, qualunque essa sia, e identificare le proprie paure cercando di andare oltre.
In alternativa già andare a prendere un gelato può aiutare.
Se ti invitassero come speaker per una conferenza e tu non dovessi parlare del tuo lavoro, di cosa parleresti?
Racconterei dei 101 migliori posti dove mangiare a Roma.
Cosa scriveresti su un billboard al centro di Roma?
Non scriverei nulla. Proietterei una delle ultime opere di David Hockney che ha posizionato sulla sua macchina numerose telecamere digitali e ha ripreso un viale alberato in mezzo al bosco durante le quattro stagioni. Sono immagini colme di bellezza, purezza e silenzio che trasmettono grande pace. Roma è una città difficile da vivere, oggi più che mai, le persone sono stanche e stressate.
Un’immagine di questo tipo regalerebbe un momento di grande serenità.
