Oisin Orlandi

Oisin was suggested by Livia. I met her just before she moved to France at the beginning of my career. She has blue eyes, a bob a la française and an Irish mother who gave her a name that many dwell on with curiosity. At nine she had a graphics tablet in her hands, photoshop and a mac to experiment with. She began her working career as an illustrator and graphic designer, today she is Art Director of Marie Claire France. 

What did you have breakfast with this morning?
Matcha milk, boiled egg, and mandarin.

What is one of the first memories you preserve?
I have many that date back to the first years of life in Milan, but I don't know if they are stories that I imagined or real memories.
Surely there are my parents inside, the birth of my sisters, the apartment in via Broni, my grandmother in Ireland at Christmas.

Tell me about one of the last projects you made.
At 18, Lula was one of my favorite English magazines, Sophia Coppola, Luella Bartley, bows, hearts and the indie scene. Recently I had the chance to take it back in hand to work on a restyling and it was a circle that closes. We have withdrawn the old claim of the mag which has been for years "girl of my dreams" and rethought the direction and the image around this new Lula girl, interpreted by all the contributors participating in each issue.

Livia suggested I ask you what it's like to be the art director of Marie Claire France. What are the challenges, what are the responsibilities?
Working for an offline commercial magazine nowadays is a big challenge in itself. The printed communication industry evolves with time and technologies and the risk of being late is always lurking. Even the production times are longer than the time it takes for news to be made public, so it is essential to review the type of information you decide to disseminate and have a very defined point of view, which gives the reader a reason to buy.
Another interesting and more personal challenge is to make communication in a language and culture different from one's own.
I believe that having an Irish mother and an Italian father has trained me to be flexible, curious and have enough empathy to perceive the differences in expression that change according to one's background, which, in any case, remains a rather complicated exercise.

What are your favorite things in the neighborhood you live in?
The park des Buttes Chaumont and the little houses of the Mouzaïa.

Miuccia Prada, Kris Jenner and Alyssa Edwards, my favorite women.

What have you changed your mind about over the last two years and why?
I changed my mind about having a dog in the apartment: the most beautiful surprise in the world.

Do you have rituals that help you feel confident about yourself?
My morning beauty routine, I use essential oils to clean and moisturize the skin, it is relaxing, repetitive and allows me to start the day with a quiet moment all for me. The whole aesthetic preparation process is part of this ritual before going out, making sure you feel ready to face a day.
It's a bit like cleaning the desk before working, putting everything in order, are ways to gain control of one's life and oneself.

What would you write on a billboard in central Paris?
Keep calm.

Oisin è stata suggerita da Livia. L'ho conosciuta poco prima che si trasferisse in Francia all'inizio del mio percorso lavorativo. Ha occhi blu, un caschetto a la française e una mamma irlandese che le ha donato un nome su cui molti si soffermano con curiosità. A nove anni aveva una tavoletta grafica in mano, photoshop e un mac con cui sperimentare. Con cosa hai fatto colazione questa mattina
Matcha latte, uovo sodo e mandarino.

Qual è uno dei primi ricordi che è rimasto impresso nella tua memoria?
Ne ho molti che risalgono ai primi anni di vita a Milano, ma non so se siano racconti che ho immaginato o veri e propri ricordi.
Sicuramente dentro ci sono i miei genitori, la nascita delle mie sorelle, l’appartamento in via Broni, mia nonna in Irlanda a Natale.

Raccontami di uno degli ultimi progetti che hai realizzato.
A 18 anni Lula era uno dei miei magazine inglesi preferiti, Sophia Coppola, Luella Bartley, fiocchi, cuori e la scena indie. Di recente ho avuto la possibilità di riprenderlo in mano per lavorare ad un restyling ed é stato un cerchio che si chiude. Abbiamo ritirato fuori il vecchio claim del mag che é stato per anni "girl of my dreams" e ripensato la direzione e l'immagine intorno a questa nuova Lula girl, interpretata da tutti i contributors che partecipano ad ogni numero.

Livia mi ha suggerito di chiederti com'è essere art director di Marie Claire Francia. Quali sono le sfide, quali le responsabilità?
Lavorare per un magazine offline commerciale al giorno d'oggi é una grossa sfida di per sé. L'industria della comunicazione stampata evolve con il tempo e le tecnologie e il rischio di essere in ritardo sono sempre in agguato. Anche le tempistiche di produzione sono più lunghe del tempo che serve a una news per essere resa pubblica, quindi è fondamentale rivedere il tipo di informazione che si decide di diffondere e avere un punto di vista molto definito, che dia al lettore una ragione per cui comprarti.
Un'altra sfida interessante e più personale é fare della comunicazione in una lingua e cultura diversa dalla propria. Credo che avere mamma irlandese e padre italiano mi abbia allenato ad essere elastica, curiosa e avere abbastanza empatia per percepire le differenze di espressione che cambiano a seconda del proprio background, che, in ogni caso, resta un esercizio piuttosto complicato.

Ho cambiato opinione sull'avere un cane in appartamento: la più bella sorpresa del mondo.

Hai dei rituali che ti aiutano a sentirti sicura di te stessa?
La mia morning beauty routine, uso oli essenziali per pulire e idratare la pelle, é rilassante, ripetitivo e mi permette di cominciare la giornata con un momento tranquillo tutto per me. Di questo rituale fa parte anche tutto il processo estetico di preparazione prima di uscire, fare in modo di sentirsi pronti ad affrontare una giornata.
E' un po come pulire la scrivania prima di lavorare, mettere tutto in ordine, sono modi per acquisire controllo della propria vita e di se stessi.
