What is the first thing you do every morning to start the day in the right direction?
There are various things I do. I usually like to wake up listening to Radio Lab podcasts or 99% invisible because they entertain me and allow me to stay in the dream world for some time before returning to the real world.
When I have the energy I like going to the sauna and then taking a cold shower.

Veronica told me to ask you if you feel more Italian or more Irish, what characteristics typical of each of these two countries do you think you have inherited?
Surely I feel more Irish. I think I managed to get the best from both cultures. From Ireland, I got a sense of humor and the ability to be open and sociable in the approach to everyday life. From Italy, I inherited the style of 'dolce vita' that taught me the importance of knowing how to cut out space to relax and appreciate the simple and fundamental things of life.

You are an art director and stylist, how can you describe your approach to work and what makes it different from everyone else?
I work mainly as an art director.
My approach is based on trying not to take inspiration from the world in which I work, but to do research everywhere, to arrive at more original and personal conclusions.
I like to inspire myself from the books of the past, with vintage graphics and images from the fifties and sixties, I also love the graphics of the old advertisements.
In contemporary reality, I draw inspiration from the world of art and architecture and from the social trends that follow one another and bring continuous change.
Books on trees and nature and science are another source of important ideas for my research.

In the course of your career, you have experimented with academic teaching, dedicating yourself to the accessory design course, which essential qualities should have, in your opinion, a good teacher?
I believe that a good teacher should never lack the aptitude to take an interest in their students and their projects, being at the same time sufficiently open to grasp their creativity and their talent, even when they do not reflect their own.

What did you want to become when you were a child?
An artist.

What brought you to Italy?
I have always been attracted to Italy and the first time I came here was to hold talks with various fashion and art institutions.
The footwear and accessories have always fascinated me and for this reason, I decided to move to Florence, a place full of experience and great masters. During the period of my studies, I did my first work experience by Saskia Wittmer, a Berliner (teacher) who opened a workshop in the center of Florence and made bespoke shoes.
When I started working for this brand, I really realized why I had come to Italy.

What is the spring that drives you to change the state of things in which you are and leave?
The sense of duty and the will to move forward.
To be part of the contemporary world we must be open to change and we must have the sensitivity to recognize when it is time to evolve.
In these years I have experienced many changes in my private life and at work. I arrived in Italy and I started to make handmade shoes and then work as a stylist and now I'm in charge of art direction.
They are all professions that belong to the creative sphere, but each has its own peculiarity.
The change for me is always a positive note, it is stimulating. We must not be afraid of evolution, change must not be seen as a limitation because it allows us to discover new talents and, consequently, to live better and in a more complete way.

Do you tend to choose courage or comfort?
The Bravery.

If you were invited as a speaker for a conference and you did not have to talk about your work, what would you talk about?
I would talk about the architecture of trees, how they intersect with each other and how they coexist, the forms they create.
I'm not an expert in plants in the technical sense, but I'm fascinated and this theme stimulates me.

What meaning does the word beauty have for you?
For me, it has to do with the sincerity and security of the person, with the ability to feel beautiful in their skin, even if this does not fall into today's canons of beauty.
I find beauty in people who do not try to hide their imperfections but accept them and show them with a confidence that gives them dignity.

What would you write on a billboard in the city where you live?
Look up.

Qual è la prima cosa che fa ogni mattina per iniziare la giornata nel verso giusto?
Ci sono varie cose che faccio. Mi piace svegliarmi ascoltando dei podcast Radiolab o 99%invisibile perché mi divertono e mi consentono di restare nel mondo dei sogni ancora per un po' di tempo prima di tornare al mondo reale. Quando ho l'energia mi piace andare in sauna e poi fare una doccia fredda.

Veronica mi ha suggerito di chiederti se ti senti più italiana o più irlandese, che caratteristiche tipiche di ciascuno di questi due Paesi ritieni di aver ereditato?
Sicuramente mi sento più irlandese. Credo di essere riuscita a prendere il meglio da entrambe le culture. Dall'Irlanda ho preso il senso dell'umorismo e la capacità di essere aperta e socievole nell'approccio alla vita di tutti i giorni. Dall'Italia ho ereditato lo stile della dolce vita che mi ha insegnato l'importanza di saper ritagliare dello spazio per rilassarsi e apprezzare le cose semplici e fondamentali della vita.

Sei una art director e stylist, come puoi descrivere il tuo approccio sul lavoro e cosa lo rende differente da tutti gli altri?
Lavoro principalmente come art director. Il mio approccio si basa sul cercare di non prendere ispirazione dal mondo in cui lavoro, ma di fare ricerca ovunque, per arrivare a conclusioni più originali e personali. Mi piace attingere ai libri del passato, con grafiche vintage e immagini degli anni cinquanta e sessanta, amo anche le grafiche delle vecchie pubblicità. Nella realtà contemporanea traggo ispirazione dal mondo dell'arte e dell'architettura e dalle tendenze sociali che si susseguono e determinano un continuo cambiamento. I libri sugli alberi e natura e quelli di scienze sono un'altra fonte di spunti importanti per le mie ricerche.

Nel corso della tua carriera ti sei cimentata con l'insegnamento accademico, dedicandoti al corso di design dell'accessorio, quali qualità essenziali dovrebbe avere, secondo te, un buon insegnante?
Credo non debba mai mancare, ad un buon insegnante, l'attitudine ad interessarsi dei propri studenti e ai loro progetti essendo al tempo stesso sufficientemente aperto a cogliere la loro creatività e il loro talento, anche quando non rispecchia i propri.

Cosa saresti voluta diventare quando eri una bambina?
Un'artista.

Cosa ti ha portata in Italia?
Sono sempre stata attratta dall'Italia e la prima volta che sono venuta qui è stato per fare dei colloqui con diversi istituti di moda e arte. La calzatura e gli accessori mi hanno sempre affascinata e per questo ho deciso di trasferirmi a Firenze, luogo ricco di esperienza e di grandi maestri. Durante il periodo di studi ho svolto la mia prima esperienza lavorativa da Saskia Wittmer, una maestra berlinese che ha aperto una bottega nel centro di Firenze e realizza calzature su misura. Quando ho cominciato a lavorare per lei ho realizzato veramente per quale motivo fossi venuta in Italia.

Quale è la molla che ti spinge a cambiare lo stato delle cose nel quale ti trovi e ripartire?
Il senso del dovere e la volontà di andare avanti. Per far parte del mondo contemporaneo dobbiamo essere aperti al cambiamento e dobbiamo avere la sensibilità per riconoscere quando sia il momento di evolvere. Io stessa in questi anni ho vissuto molti cambiamenti, nella vita privata e sul lavoro. Sono arrivata in Italian e ho iniziato ha fare scarpe realizzate a mano per poi lavorare come stylist ed ora mi occupo di art direction. Sono tutte professioni che appartengono all'ambito creativo, ma ciascuna ha la sua peculiarità. Il cambiamento per me è sempre una nota positiva, è stimolante. Non bisogna avere paura dell'evoluzione, il cambiamento non deve essere visto come un limite perché ci consente di scoprire nuovi talenti e, di conseguenza, di vivere meglio e in modo più completo.

Tendi a scegliere il coraggio o il comfort?
Il coraggio.

Se ti invitassero come speaker per una conferenza e tu non dovessi parlare del tuo lavoro, di cosa parleresti?
Parlerei dell'architettura degli alberi, di come si intersecano tra di loro e di come convivono, delle forme che creano. Non sono un'esperta di piante in senso tecnico, ma ne sono affascinata e questo tema mi stimola.

Che significato ha la parola bellezza per te?
Per me ha a che fare con la sincerità e con la sicurezza della persona, con la capacità di sentirsi bello nella propria pelle, anche se questa non rientra negli odierni canoni di bellezza. Trovo bellezza nelle persone che non cercano di nascondere le proprie imperfezioni ma le accettano e le mostrano con una disinvoltura che gli conferisce dignità.
